“I have thirty years of painting behind me. I have had shows across the entire world, including the USA with Wally Finlay. Since I have been working exclusively with Park West, it is different compared to other galleries: First of all, the founder Albert Scaglione, whom I have known for over 20 years, is a man who does everything so that the artist feels as creatively free as possible, without any constraints. Albert is a very generous person, as much with artists as with clients. Thanks to this generosity, Park West organizes VIP shows where artists meet clients in the world’s most beautiful places. This allows an exchange of ideas and great creative energy for the artists. All of these VIP shows are coordinated under the direction of the president Marc Scaglione who is the innovator and organizer.
I therefore have the good fortune to exhibit in the most beautiful gallery in the world, run by Morris Shapiro (Gallery Director). He is always looking for the most beautiful works, such as Chagall, Rembrandt, Miro, Dali, etc. And for us, contemporary artists, it is truly wonderful to be shown in such a museum.
Without forgetting the organization of the administrative offices, everything is set up so that the artist is concerned only with painting. All of this exchange of energy that Park West provides comes from the entire Scaglione family.
No other gallery invests as much as Park West in the promotion of its artists. Be it in its superb catalogues, the trips and especially the high quality of the fabrication of serigraphs and giclees. That is the principal preoccupation of Park West: Quality and nothing but quality.
For me, a French artist, I am lucky to have Kathryn Stewart: an interpreter who speaks French as will as I do, who makes herself available and is very nice.
Thank you Park West. It is a great honor to be a part of your team of painters and to be so marvelously well esteemed.”

Born in Lytham St.Annes Lancashire in 1956,
Peter Nixon’s direction in a career art was first
realized as early as the age of four. At nine
years old Peter visited his first museum, the
Royal Academy of Art, London England. Here
he would see Di Vinci’s “Virgin and Child” which
would have a profound effect on young Peters
Artistic development. At seventeen Peter was accepted into Blackpool’s fine
art academy where he was schooled in the study of the human form and
the discipline of drawing that is the foundation of many of his creations
today. Peter finished out his artistic education at bath Academy of Art
where he extended his skill in graphical art.

The main themes of Nixon’s paintings are primarily idealized and stylized
figures in states of joy, exhilaration and ecstasy. They share moments of
tranquil elation, feeling lighter than air, reveling in being just pure spirits -
in love, dancing, listening to music in celebration of their most vivid
collective memories. That time that we are truly alive, ecstatic, positive and
living in the moment.
His work is extremely well received by collectors the world over in all of its
forms, whether figurative, still life, or a combination of representational and
abstract elements combined.
Today he is widely exhibited in cities in the United States, Europe and
throughout the world.
A contribution on painting

Peter Nixon
My paintings, whilst contemporary in feel have a strong classical influence;
my art education was grounded in the traditional skills of easel painting
and life drawing and my personal preferences are mostly for the Old
Masters of the Renaissance and those artists practicing at the beginning of
the Twentieth century; particularly Picasso and Matisse.
I don’t aim to create pastiches of Old Master paintings; my subject matter
is definitely contemporary, but I love their evocative power and
theatricality, their rich textures and dramatic chiaroscuro.
Painting is civilisation’s collective memory; in which significant themes
figures and objects are illustrated in an atmosphere freed from a functional
context; representing a manifestation of our deepest hopes and dreams
and our highest cultural achievement; the uninhibited mind at play.
What painting often seeks to capture are moments of transcendence; a
condensation of sensations where the subject of the painting is
transformed from an everyday object or thought into something seen in a
new light, with an intensity not previously known. It is art’s purpose to pin
down a significant moment or memory that chimes with a multitude of
other moments. This represents a complete experience, a powerful
evocation, triggering the revelation of a connection between the events in
our lives which memory then unifies.
When we examine our memories it is with the same intuitive sense we
employ when painting a canvas. Like our memories, painting is never truly
concrete because it seeks to capture fleeting sensations-elation, ecstasy,
joy; what we feel most vividly before time and distance dull the moment.
The compulsion for the artist to pin down these precious moments is a
potent force and draws its power from the futile struggle against their
inevitable evaporation. What Art records are the memories and traces of
this challenge.
When formulating an idea for a painting, my memory plays a vital role as I
bounce the idea around looking for connections and echoes. Often an Old
master painting will emerge in the equation as an indicator of the direction
to be taken.
I was reminded of this intrinsic quality of memory and contemplation in
painting when completing a series of pictures called ‘Odalisque I & II.’
These paintings were inspired by specific paintings by Matisse and Picasso
who were themselves returning to a classic theme immortalised by old
masters such as Ingres and Delacroix; namely pictures of idealised women
in eastern dress couched in lavish surroundings.
But what was of interest to Matisse, and also myself, was not the
exoticism of the subject matter, but the expression of a feeling of leisurely
contemplation, of allowing the mind to expand, of time compelled to stand
still. The extravagance illustrated in these paintings; the marble, the gilded
drapery, the lush silks, represent the richness of the imagination when
explored at a measured pace.
Increasingly in this fast forward world we are denied the facility of this
form of languorous gazing; of close observation without a specific purpose
or goal. When the mind is allowed to roam free, to accept random
associative thoughts, only then can intuition offer up its gifts and new
ideas are created.
Park West
Foundation Sponsors Memorable Visit to
Louisville’s Muhammad Ali Center

Copyright © 2008 PR Newswire Association LLC. All Rights Reserved.
SOUTHFIELD, Mich., Aug. 28 /PRNewswire/ — A special group of Detroit-area
young women and men enjoyed the once-in-a-lifetime experience of
meeting Muhammad Ali in person thanks to an educational program
sponsored by Southfield’s Park West Foundation in association with Park
West Gallery. Park West Gallery founder Albert Scaglione and his wife Mitsie
accompanied the young Detroiters to Louisville last week to visit with the
international boxing legend at the city’s acclaimed Muhammad Ali Center.

Muhammad Ali, perhaps more than any other living celebrity, represents a
universal standard of personal excellence, dignity and achievement,” said
Scaglione. “He is an inspiration to the world, and our young friends are
returning with stories and motivation that will last a lifetime.”

The young women and men — Jewel Rich 19, Latasha Posey 19, Dayanna
Holland-Womack 14, Calisia Clinkscale 19, Shaina Riser 19, Steve Curry 18,
Dondraill Thomas 17, Derica Clinkscale 18, Latoya Posey 18 — who are
aging out of foster care and are beneficiaries of Park West Foundation’s
FAMILY project, did not go to Louisville empty handed. They, along with
their mentors Saba Gebrai and Weusi Olusola, presented Muhammad Ali
with an award expressing their thanks and admiration for the Olympic Gold
Medal winner and three-time heavyweight champion of the world.

“It was emotional to watch the movie about his life,” said Latasha Posey.
“It was great that he didn’t give up. He kept fighting for what he believed
in and that’s what he said to us, never give up.”

“It was inspiring, moving and educational for each and every youth to
embody the message of finding the greatness within through the spiritual
journey of the life and work of Muhammad Ali,” said Gebrai. “I was simply in
awe to be in his presence. We are grateful to him, his wife Loni and the
Muhammad Ali Center for their gracious reception of our youth from Detroit.”

Albert Scaglione has gifted and lent several paintings by Park West Gallery
artists Simon Bull and Peter Max, along with rare Ali signed photographs to
the Center. “We anticipate that over time these important works — which
celebrate a man who has lived as a champion inside and outside the boxing
ring — will become part of this extraordinary Center’s permanent art
collection.”

Visitors to the 60,000 square-foot museum and learning center, which
opened in 2005, are able to view a selection of Ali-inspired art in a
dedicated Part West Gallery exhibit area. Featured are a number of Ali
action portraits by famed British artist Simon Bull, each signed by Ali and
Bull. “The chance to both portray a legend and have him sign your work is a
dream most artists never have the opportunity to fulfill,” said Bull.

The Park West Foundation is a not-for-profit organization founded in 2005
by Park West Gallery founder and CEO Albert Scaglione and his wife Mitsie
as a way to give back to their community. Among the many initiatives of the
Park West Foundation is the FAMILY project. The FAMILY project provides
young people about to “age out” of Foster care with a safe, loving, family
environment as well as mentoring, resources, and opportunities that will
help these young people move toward productive and fulfilling adult lives.
The Park West Foundation is funded mainly through financial contributions
and donations of art.

Park West Gallery(R), one of the world’s largest art dealers by unit sales,
conducts fine art auctions across the United States and Canada. Park West
Gallery also conducts art auctions at sea on 85 cruise ships around the
world. In addition to its 63,000 square foot world headquarters, main
gallery and fine art conservation facility in Southfield, Michigan, Park West
Gallery operates a 181,000 square foot framing and distribution center in
Miami Lakes, Florida, and maintains a catalog sales business. Park West
Gallery pioneered a unique business model in the world of art auctions. At
the Park West Gallery Fine Art auctions, nearly 90 percent of the art work
offered comes directly from the studios of living artists. Park West Gallery is
well-known for having brought the art work of many of the world’s leading
artists, including M.C. Escher, Victor Vasarely, Yaacov Agam, Peter Max,
Romero Britto, and Itzchak Tarkay, to a broad audience of art collectors
from all over the globe. Park West Gallery’s extensive relationships with
artists and its ability to reach art enthusiasts around the world helps
generate sales of approximately 300,000 works of fine art each year.
During 40 years in business, Park West Gallery has brought the world of
fine art to over 1.2 million clients in more than 60 countries.
collection for up to 40 months.

“Since our founding in 1969, we’ve had the pleasure of introducing fine art
to more than 1.2 million people through our galleries and land and sea
auctions,” said Albert Scaglione, Park West Gallery founder and chief
executive officer. “Customers have always been able to purchase art and
collectables with confidence at Park West Gallery, and our
40-40-40 customer satisfaction guarantee further demonstrates our
commitment to making the ownership of fine art a lasting joy for our
clients.”

Beginning September 1, 2008, the new 40-40-40 policy will be in effect at
Park West Gallery land-based auctions, as well as auctions at sea on cruise
lines featuring Park West Gallery art, including Carnival Cruises, Disney
Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, and Royal
Caribbean Cruise Line.
John Haffey, publisher of the art industry trade magazine Art World News,
has praised Park West Gallery’s 40-40-40 policy as, “the most customer-
friendly guarantee in the auction world.”

“Our mission when we started 40 years ago was to bring the experience of
researching, collecting and living with fine art to people who did not live in
close proximity to the outstanding galleries, dealerships and auction
houses of major markets like New York and Los Angeles,” said Scaglione. “I
believe we have fulfilled that promise for so many years because of our
expertise, passion for art and deep respect for our clients. The 40-40-40
guarantee builds on that tradition.”

The Park West Gallery collection includes works by many of the most
celebrated artists in history, as well as dozens of talented living artists
from all over the world. “More than 90 percent of the works we sell are by
artists our customers can directly interact with in our galleries and auction
venues,” said Scaglione. “Acquiring beautiful objects for your home created
by talented people you actually meet and learn from is especially
rewarding. We have thousands of clients who have told us these
experiences are among the most enjoyable of their lives. That’s the
greatest compliment we can receive.

At Park West Gallery works by such renowned living artists as Peter Max,
Romero Britto, Itzchak Tarkay, Thomas Kinkade, Alfred Gockel, Csaba
Markus,Yaacov Agam, Marcus Glenn, and Dominic Pangborn are offered
along side works by Picasso, Chagall, Dali, Rembrandt and Renoir.

Under Park West Gallery’s 40-40-40 policy, clients can obtain a refund
within 40 days after receipt of the art work. The refund will cover the full
purchase price, less the buyer’s premium up to a maximum of $1,000 per
piece, and less any shipping costs if applicable. Clients can exchange any
work purchased for any other work in the Park West Gallery collection of
the same or greater price up to 40 months after the date of the invoice.
Customers wishing to exchange items will be credited with the amount
paid for the work purchased, including buyer’s premium and excluding
shipping and handling, with the only charges being shipping and handling
and any price difference when the exchange is for a work of greater price.
Exchanges must be made directly with Park West Gallery by phoning 1-877-
440-0630 and are not allowed at auction. And Park West Gallery, as it has
for 40 years, stands behind every work of art in its collection, guaranteeing
its authenticity and quality.

The new customer satisfaction guarantee will be posted prominently at all
Park West Gallery auctions and is presented on the company’s website at
www.parkwestgallery.com.
Selling approximately 300,000 works of art each year, Park West Gallery is
one of the world’s largest art dealers. The company conducts auctions
across the United States and Canada, as well as at sea on 85 cruise ships
around the world. The Park West Gallery collection includes oil and acrylic
paintings, watercolors and drawings, hand-signed limited edition etchings,
lithographs, serigraphs, and hand embellished graphic works, as well as
animation art and selected sports memorabilia. The company’s research
and catalog departments are among the most respected in the world. In
addition to Park West Gallery’s 63,000 square foot headquarters gallery in
Southfield, Michigan, the company operates a gallery, framing and
distribution center in its 181,000 square foot facility in Miami Lakes, Florida.

Andrew Bone – Putting the finishing touches to the
planning of a Southern African safari

Wildlife artist Andrew Bone is in the process
of putting the finishing touches to the
planning of a Southern African safari for the
end of the year. The trip will involve 4 African
countries and more than 6 000 km.
Here’s the plan!

We shall begin our journey in my faithful
Land Rover Defender from our home on
the Southeast coast of South Africa, west through the mountain kingdom
of Lesotho. A small proudly independent country surrounded by South
Africa, boasting some of the most rugged mountainous country (and the
highest altitude bar in Africa) in Southern Africa. We will be entering
Lesotho via the Sanipass, one of the steepest gradients of any graveled
road with plans to tar it. Since living in south Africa, I have wanted to drive
up the pass.

Exiting Lesotho through it’s western boundary we shall proceed northwest
into the dry hinterland of South Africa, towards the Orange River and to
the Kgalagdi Transfrontier National Park. This unique park is a perfect
example of the possibilities of African states working together to benefit
wildlife. Three independent national parks have joined to form one large
park that encompasses the three countries of South Africa, Namibia and
Botswana. Kgalagdi is renowned for it’s cheetah population.

Entering Namibia we will travel to the capital Windhoek and onto the
inhospitable, desolate skeleton coast, boasting the highest sand dunes in
the world and a Cape seal population numbering over 100 000. I have
heard that time spent viewing the colony is limited to how long one can
stand the aroma! We will then head inland towards the northeast to the
Etosha National Park.

Situated in the north of Namibia, close to the Angolan border lies the
Etosha. An area rich in wildlife since the introduction of waterholes, it is
famous for it’s enormous elephant, springbok and Oryx. Lion follow the
herds and I read a report of a pride of lion tearing through the middle of a
game viewing hide, chasing an eland, scattering wildlife enthusiasts in
every direction.

After spending as much time as possible in Etosha we will journey west
along the Caprivi Strip to the point where, on the Zambezi river, Namibia,
Zambia and Zimbabwe meet. We will take a bit of time out at the Victoria
Falls and enjoy bungee-jumping and white water-rafting. It will, I’m sure
be a nostalgic trip as we have not traveled back to Zimbabwe for 5 years
or more – and our favorite place is the Falls. We shall enter Botswana
through the Chobe and travel south to the Central Kalahari Game Reserve.

This is not for the faint hearted. The oldest desert in the world is also
home to the desert elephant, the black-maned Kalahari lion and the
Bushman. Everything that survives in this area has learnt to adapt and live
on the meagerest of water and food. It is here that I want to ‘discover’
the San people, record their ways and paint and sketch them in their
wonderful environment. The Bushmen were the original occupants of
Southern Africa and some of their rock art dates back 5 000 years.

We shall then re-enter South Africa through southern Botswana and
journey home again.

I hope through this safari, with my wife and 3 teenage daughters, to open
up a new concept to my wildlife art. Previously, most of my work has
depicted the Zambezi valley, and although beautiful, it is totally different
to the central desert areas of southern Africa . I hope to bring the dusty
elephant of Savuti, the Bushmen of the Kalahari and the tough black-
maned lion to my Park West collectors in an exhibition of oils, sketches and
studies to be held in the course of next year. In addition, I would like to
dedicate one evening to a slide show and talk of the safari.
COLLECTION

The Howard Behrens exhibition, “Fairwell to a Master: A Retrospective Look
at 25 Years of Extraordinary Art,” exhibition will take place Friday, August
29, 2008 through Monday, September 1, 2008. Behrens will make two
gallery appearances during special receptions in his honor on Saturday,
August 30 and Sunday, August 31 from 7:00 PM until 10:00 PM.

“Howard Behrens is one of our most popular and beloved artists,” said
gallery owner Kim Miller. “This is a bittersweet event for us; although we
are delighted that Howard will be sharing his magnificent collection of art
with us again, we are quite saddened knowing that this will be his final
gallery exhibition. He is a master of his time, so extraordinarily talented,
and truly a wonderful human being who we have had the pleasure of
befriending over the past years.”

Using only a palette knife for its boldness and control, Behrens paints with
great dramatic intensity and focus. His paintings, distinctively textured and
brilliantly illuminated land and seascapes, evoke memories of romantic
interludes in exotic settings, often encompassing familiar architecture and
promenades. Classically trained, Behrens developed his current painting
style from his lifelong passion for travel, particularly to beautiful coastal
regions.

From the idyllic lakes of Italy to the intimate gardens of New England, the
artist has had a romance with the sun, capturing its many different moods
and the radiance of its gifts – shadow, light, color, and the subtle nuances
of these elements. Behrens has been influenced by other master artists
such as Claude Monet and Vincent Van Gogh, as well as Nicola Simbari, the
Italian palette knife artist.

Since becoming a professional artist in 1980, Behrens has had over 250
one-man shows from coast-to-coast. His works have been on the covers of
many art publications and he has been the featured subject of numerous
magazines and newspapers. After visiting Giverny, France last year, the
last home of Monet, the artist created a “Tribute to Monet” series that was
exhibited at the Embassy of France in Washington, D. C. As an official artist
for the 2002 Winter Olympics, Behrens’ painting, “In Motion,” was featured

A chance encounter with a Renoir painting turned David Najar’s
life upside down. Once a tough Krav Maga coach, Najar makes a
living painting

Nira Dan

A touch of color

Growing up in a traditional Sephardic family in Netanya, art had no place in
David Najar’s childhood. “In my family there was no such thing as an artist
or painter. The closest thing to a painting we had at home was a tapestry.”
Though his public school teachers were impressed by his artistic skill, his
fellow classmates mocked him. The young David understood that it was
best to give up painting and join the boys on the soccer field. Sports
became the center of his life. When he was older, David started working
out at a center for Krav Maga (an Israeli hand-to-hand combat method) in
Netanya. The center was opened by Imi Sde-Or, the legendary Israeli figure
who developed the defense method. When Najar met Imi a special bond
immediately formed between the two, despite the 50-year age difference
between them. Krav Maga is based on various techniques in judo, karate,
ju-jitsu, boxing and other martial arts. The method was adopted and
developed by the Israeli Defense Forces and later by special combat forces
around the world. Imi started developing the method back in Europe as a
way to fight the Nazi gangs that attacked him and his friends during his
youth in Slovenia. When he immigrated to Israel, he was invited by Yitzhak
Sadeh (an Israeli military leader and one of the founders of the IDF) to
teach the method to the Hagana defense forces. Now working with the
army, Imi continued to develop the method until he retired to open a Krav
Maga center in Netanya. After training intensively, Najar became a coach
and soon one of the leading figures in the field. “I used to meet Imi at his
café in Netanya,” Najar relates. “He had a special table there where he’d
receive his guests. People from all over the world came to meet him – he
knew everyone who trained in his method. We would talk about everything,
about Krav Maga, life, God and girls. Imi always told me that I’d get
involved with a lot of things I wasn’t aware of yet, but I didn’t really pay
attention,” Najar says, smiling while he serves Turkish coffee.

We’re sitting in Najar’s studio in south Tel Aviv. It’s raining outside and
there’s a chill in the air. Najar smiles shyly. Even with his success and sales
in the United States, he still has a hard time believing that he’s managing
to make a living from painting. “For years I did Krav Maga and made a living
from it. My friends were accountants and engineers and suddenly
I became a painter. People were shocked. My friends and family said it was
nonsense, a passing phase.” But it didn’t pass.
It all started with a visit to the museum. “I saw a painting by Renoir, and I
said to myself, I have to learn how to do that.” He signed up for a painting
course in Ramat Aviv. Most of the other students were retirees and Najar,
with his wide and muscular shoulders, was without a doubt an attraction in
the class. “I bought paints and started ruining canvases,” Najar says.
“By day I taught Krav Maga and by night I painted. In the beginning I
would paint all night in our tiny spare room, but when we had a baby he
started taking over the room. I moved to the living room. My wife said I was
messing up the house and that the piant smell was unbearable. But I
couldn’t stop. I would get up in the middle of the night to paint.”
Najar wanted to paint all day and make a living from his art, but all the
artists he knew seemed to be struggling financially. “That wasn’t what I
wanted,” David says. “I wanted to live a normal life.” One day his teacher
invited him to participate in an exhibition. “I got really positive feedback
and lots of complements, but someone also came up and asked
to buy a painting. I name a price that at the time seemed astronomical to
me – and he agreed.” And the rest is history. David sells his paintings
mostly in the United States. He doesn’t need to wake up in the middle of
the night to paint in the living room anymore. He has a studio in south Tel
Aviv where he paints. The decision to rent a studio and be
a full time painter wasn’t easy. There were a lot of things he was unsure
about. “I understood that to make it you can’t just be a weekend painter
and I had a lot of concerns,” Najar says. Luckily, he met a painter that
helped him. “I trained him at the gym and he trained me at painting.
After I’d finish a painting I couldn’t help myself – I’d run to show it to
him. I wanted to hear what he thought, how I could improve. He always
had the patience to talk to me and he always supported me. We’d work out
with the painting in the background. He’d critique my painting and I’d
critique his moves.” Najar smiles and offers me another coffee. It’s
pouring outside now, but his studio is full of canvases with spring
blossoms. They’re waiting to be sent to the US. “I love nature,” he says,
glancing over his paintings. “I like to paint nature. I travel a lot, to see
flowers blooming, to the sea. I have to be in contact with nature. But the
truth is you don’t have to go far. We can be in contact with nature all the
time. It’s enough to just look out the window. There’s nothing ugly in
nature. The only ugliness is in places that have been touched by man’s
hand. People seek harmony. Nature has amazing colors and harmony – all
you need to do is look. Sometimes people don’t know how to look
sideways. I think people need to learn to take a break to see the beauty
around them. I say, stop for a moment and look. Especially in this
country with things as they are, it’s healthy to stop a moment. I think my
paintings open that channel up for people, maybe that’s my duty…”

of Park West Gallery’s Framing Project

The center of downtown Big Rapids, Michigan might be the last place
you’d expect to view a collection of Salvador Dali woodcut prints. But
due to the generosity of Albert Scaglione, CEO of Park West Gallery,
you now can.

In 1998, Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University
was the recipient of approximately 300 pieces of contemporary artwork from Park West Gallery,
that, in addition to the Dali woodcuts, includes lithographs,
silkscreen prints and etchings from internationally known artists such
as Itzchak Tarkay, Yaacov Agam and Marcel Mouly.

In 1999, Carrie Weis became the director of the college exhibition
facility, the Rankin Fine Art Gallery, and was thrilled by the recent
donation, and especially with the works by Dali.

“I’m a painter, with an MFA, and Dali is one of my favorite artists.
It’s incredible to me to have his actual original work. I try to
explain to the students how important he is historically. Seeing his
work was one of the biggest surprises when I took this position as
director of the gallery,” said
Weis.

This gift was part of a larger series of donations that made to
university collections across the United States, totaling over $40
million worth of art. Park West Gallery’s newest endeavor is to offer
to frame, for free, 100 works of art for each institution.

“Framing can be expensive. Many places may not have funding to get
their works out in public places. This is huge-a tremendous help-it
will be a great undertaking to have that many pieces framed,” said
Weis.

Once the work is framed, Weis plans to have a featured exhibition of
the works, titled. “The Scaglione Collection,” during the next academic
year.

“Our gallery schedules exhibitions a year in advance, so in the
2009-2010 season we’ll take advantage of the opportunity to show the
work.”

“I want to help the kids be able to go to your schools. Let’s
just do it.”
-Albert Scalione
Cornerstone Schools Fundraiser

Park West Gallery is involved in a myriad of philanthropic activities,
including their support of the high-performing, independent Cornerstone
Schools in Detroit.

On September 8th, Park West will be one of the corporate sponsors for
the 3rd annual Be a Tiger for Kids event hosted by the Detroit Tigers
at Comerica Park. Participants will attend a pre-game party called
Rock ‘n Roar, a family-friendly event with food, entertainment, and
games. Tickets also include the Tigers vs. Oakland A’s ball game, where
the Cornerstone choir will sing the national anthem wearing bright
orange tee shirts.

Yet to say the Park West Gallery helps support this event is a gross
understatement. When Albert and Mitsie Scaglione commit themselves to a
project they give one hundred percent. In fact, the CEO of Cornerstone
Schools, Clark Durant, has been so impressed by the Scaglione’s
dedication that he wrote a letter on June 24, 2008 to the ArtServe
Michigan Governor’s Arts Awards Committee nominating Park West Gallery
for an ArtServe Award in the Exemplary Business category.

To summarize, last year the Cornerstone Schools were falling short of
funds for their pre-k to 8th grade music and arts programs, as well as
scholarship money that allows urban children to attend the schools.
Ticket sales for the planned event with the Detroit Tigers were
seriously lagging, and so—less than four weeks before the event—Clark
Durant met with Albert Scaglione to explain how he was hoping to
generate funds for the school.

Within one day, Albert Scaglione committed himself to the project,
saying, “I want to help the kids be able to go to your schools. Let’s
just do it.”

According to Durant, “He mobilized his creative art staff; he called
two well known artists; he developed new messaging and packaging; he
organized an ‘800’ number call center, and he created and printed
900,000 highly attractive and compelling flyers that the Detroit
Newspaper Agency, the Michigan Chronicle, the C & G newspapers
distributed throughout the metropolitan Detroit area. Those efforts by
Park West and Albert over the three weeks after our visit made success
possible for the arts and for our children.”

The result was a record amount netted by a fundraiser at a ballpark:
just over a million dollars! Durant credits the Park West Gallery for
making this possible. He goes on to say that Albert Scaglione “never
sought credit for his involvement!”

Reached by phone, Clark Durant elaborated: “Albert and his whole team
are fabulous people and have been immensely helpful to us.”

Whether or not the Park West Gallery receives a Michigan Governor’s
Arts Award, they are the silent heroes in the lives of the over 1100
children who attend the Cornerstone Schools.
